Amityville Dominican and Houston Associate Collaborate on Healthcare Project
Amityville Sister Barbara Schwarz marvels at how her artwork, like pint-sized preachers, gets around! Like St. Dominic who roamed the countryside to share the Good News, her past and present paintings seem to capture the same itinerant spirit. Most recently, ten of her abstract paintings were featured in the 2021 International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH) in a presentation on Compassionate Listening in Palliative Care by Houston Dominican Associate Phylliss M. Chappell, a physician in Supportive and Palliative Care in Houston Methodist Hospital.

The presentation encouraged virtual attendees to consider the importance of listening deeply and holding a compassionate space for the suffering of others.  S. Barbara felt enlivened to have her abstract work enjoyed by healthcare professionals around the world, but also was just as excited that this project was a collaboration between two Dominicans: A Religious Sister and an Associate.

Indigenous Peoples Day
Last month, President Joe Biden issued the first-ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples' Day AND he issued a proclamation for Columbus Day. It is worth your time to pay attention to both. Doing so is a way of acknowledging the impact of the colonization of the place many indigenous tribes call "Turtle Island," the North American continent, and to understanding our responsibility to never forget the consequences of that colonization.

Sister Spotlight: Sr. Diane Smith, OP, Dominican Sister of San Rafael

As we approached the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 last month, plenty of people were swapping “where were you that day” stories. One such testament that stands out is a story about a story — an article in The Wall Street Journal to be precise. A story that would lead to an unexpected friendship — a bright spot in a dark time.

Being a light to others is a hallmark of the Dominican tradition and one that the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael espouse as they endeavor to bring the Gospel to bear on the headlines of the day; to bring the light of Christ into the lives of others.
Associate Spotlight: Andrea Meyer, Associate of the Sinsinawa Dominicans

For Andrea Meyer, an Associate of the Sinsinawa Dominicans for over 30 years, the Dominican Volunteers USA (DVUSA) program led her to take early retirement from her job as a speech pathologist. DVUSA would then match her with the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, NY, to minister at Siena House while living in community with several Blauvelt Dominican Sisters. On the most recent episode of the Hearts Afire Podcast, Andrea discussed the program, as well as what led her to join DVUSA, a program that she “held close to her heart.”
