Learning Life Lessons at Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes Convent on our San Rafael campus is home to senior sisters in need of assistance. Under the direction of the administrator Sr. Mary Kieffer, a caring and skilled staff tend to the physical and spiritual needs of the sisters. The time throughout the pandemic was particularly challenging for this vulnerable group, but now a spirit of hope and gratitude permeates. In addition, an intergenerational collaborative project with neighboring university students is now possible and finally underway.

The highly regarded nursing program at Dominican University of California (DUC), founded as Dominican College by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael more than 130 years ago, offers a second-year course, Geriatric Foundations, which aims to explore the needs of an aging population, and nearby Lourdes Convent provides an excellent clinical training ground with resident sisters and a helpful skilled staff all willing to oblige these young scholars with practical opportunities.

Letters: Pope Francis and Brother Gerard
On May 24th, the Order of Preachers observes the Memorial of the Translation of St. Dominic. This date commemorates the date in 1233 when, twelve years after the death of Dominic in 1221, his remains were moved from their original, modest burial place behind an altar of the church of San Nicolo in Bologna, Italy, to a large marble tomb in a more prominent place in the church.
On this Memorial in 2021, Pope Francis wrote a letter to the Master of the Order, Brother Gerard Timoner, in honor of the 800th Anniversary of the Death of Dominic. Brother Gerard wrote a letter in response.
DSC Futuring Leadership Team Set to Start July 1
For quite some time, members of the Dominican Sisters Conference (DSC) have desired to find a common way to embrace the future of Dominican Life and Mission in the US. Through the work of the OP Sisterhood Futuring Task Force, that pathway has been made more clear and more real. The work of the Task Force has led to the creation of a new, younger cohort of leaders who are being asked to serve as a catalyst for conversation and engagement about the future with sisters under 70 across congregational boundaries. On July 1, 2021, the DSC Futuring Leadership Team will begin a three-year term.

800th Jubilee Reflection
The Dominican Family is celebrating the 800th anniversary of the death of Our Holy Father St. Dominic during a jubilee year that began on the 6th of January 2021 through the 6th of January 2022.

We, the Dominican Sisters Conference/DomLife, are joining with OPWest Dominican Congregations in celebration by offering you monthly reflections on the Theme "At Table with St. Dominic," which is inspired by the Mascarella table, the table on which the first portrait of St. Dominic was painted shortly after his canonization. Fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner, OP, shared, “We will celebrate St. Dominic not as a saint alone on a pedestal, but a saint enjoying table fellowship with his brothers, gathered by the same vocation to preach God’s Word and sharing God’s gift of food and drink." This motnh's reflection is by Sister Abby Newton, a Dominican Sister of San Rafael.
Sister Spotlight: Sister Donna Maria Moses, Suited to Serve

From an early age, Sister Donna Maria Moses has felt called and responded with service to God, country, community, congregation. After graduating Harvard University, Donna Maria chose a teaching career, but limited job opportunities convinced her to leave New Hampshire. Relocating to California, she taught high school and converted to the Catholic faith. To supplement income and respond to the need for more women in the services she was commissioned a Naval Officer and assigned to duty in Oakland. While completing a Doctorate in Education at the University of San Francisco, she encountered the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose.
