Fatima Morales began her novitiate as a Dominican Sister of Mission San Jose with the Rite of Initiation into Religious Life celebrated at Evening Prayer of the Body and Blood of Christ on June 5. A school psychologist, Fatima is a native of Houston, TX. She learned about the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose through online searches of religious congregations. She will begin her novitiate at St. Thomas More Community, Tucson, AZ, and minister at the Catholic Newman Center at the University of Arizona.

On May 1, Sister of St. Dominic of Amityville Margaret Smyth, OP, presented "No Room for Them in the Inn", as part of an ongoing online series for The Year of St. Joseph sponsored by the Vicars of Religious of the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre in New York. Sr. Margaret, founder of the Northfork Spanish Apostolate, works with the Spanish-speaking community on the east end of Long Island. |

A Big Dominican Welcome to our “New College Preachers”
Over the last week of May, twenty-eight students from Dominican Universities/Colleges around the country as well as twelve mentors and twenty-five presenters came together virtually to celebrate the 20th Annual National Preaching in Action Conference. These young people came together to learn about our Dominican Charism of preaching and how that Charism can be incorporated into their own lives and passed on to others.

The Late Sister Ana Feliz, OP, Recognized
Leaders and members of the Charismatic Movement in the Dominican Republic celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special conference honoring the late Sister Ana Feliz, OP, founder of the local movement. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is a “spiritual movement within the Catholic Church that emphasizes the availability of the power and the many gifts of the Holy Spirit in the life of every believer.” The Charismatic Movement encompasses that spirituality in mainline Protestant churches, as well as in the Catholic Church.

Dominican Junior Kelsey Major Named 2020-2021 Gatorade Louisiana Soccer Player of the Year
In its 36th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade has named St. Mary’s Dominican High School junior Kelsey Major as its 2020-2021 Gatorade Louisiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The honor gives Major the distinction of being the first student in Louisiana’s history to be named a state player of the year in more than one sport in the same year. In the fall, she was named Louisiana’s Gatorade Player of the Year winner in girls cross country.

Aquinas High School Graduates It's Final Class
After ninety-eight years of educating young women in the Bronx, Aquinas High School held its final Commencement Exercises on June 10. Julissa Reynoso Pantaleón, Class of 1993, delivered a virtual commencement address. Reynoso Pantaleón is chief of staff to First Lady Jill Biden and former U.S. ambassador to Uruguay. Aquinas High School was faithful to its mission: Educating and inspiring young women for a lifetime of faith, learning, and compassionate action for a more just world. Legendary for providing an excellent education for young women of the Bronx, Aquinas served the changing immigrant populations that have called the Bronx “home” over the decades.

How White People can Celebrate Juneteenth
This annual celebration of the day in 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War finally reached Texas has come to the consciousness of more white people as a consequence of our society being shaken into awareness by the police murder of George Floyd. African Americans have celebrated Juneteenth since 1866. Perhaps you’d like to join in the celebration this year, but are unsure whether you should, or how. The Dominican Sisters of Springfield offer some options.

New Podcast Series from the Dominican Sisters of Hope Celebrates the Life of Dominic de Guzman
The Dominican Sisters of Hope Celebrations Committee has released a 10-part podcast series: Celebrating Dominic de Guzman. For ten weekly sessions through June and July 2021, Sisters, associates, and laypeople will explore the life and legacy of Saint Dominic. The final podcast will be released on August 6, 2021; the 800th anniversary of the death of our Holy Father, Dominic de Guzman.

Congratulations to Sr. Mary Flood of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, NY! In late April, Sr. Mary was honored as a Women of Distinction for the New York State 97th Assembly District. The Women of Distinction honorees were nominated by community members, then selected by Assemblyman Mike Lawler, and presented with an official NYS Assembly Proclamation. Dominican Family Spotlight: Adrian's Service Heroes
The Adrian Dominican Sisters took time on June 10, 2021, to recognize 38 employees who marked a total of 375 years of service to the Congregation. Under the theme “Legendary Heroes,” the recognition took the form of a presentation that played throughout the day for Sisters and employees at the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse Campus to view. Celebrating 30 years of service is Nilda Rau, Director of Resident Services. |
