Sister Victoria Dalesandro, OP, Honored for Ministry with Breast Cancer Patients

Adrian Dominican Sister Victoria Dalesandro, OP, received the 2020 “Croc a Mile in Our Shoes” Award recently from Susan G. Komen Nevada and Dignity Health Wellness Centers for her “continued superior service to breast cancer patients and the embodiment of the values and guiding principles of Dignity Health Wellness Centers.”

Former Collaborative Dominican Novitiate Transformed into Home for Women in Transition

For many Dominican Sisters, the CDN in St. Louis was home during their canonical novitiate year. The Collaborative Dominican Novitiate (CDN) moved to this location in 2001. In 2020, they moved to Chicago, IL, and the former location was transformed into a home for women in transition. 

Dominican Volleyball Team Receives Champions Welcome


Students, faculty, and personnel celebrated St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s state champion volleyball team with a Champions Parade on campus. Dominican won the Division I championship title at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) state volleyball tournament on November 14.

A New Chapter Formed


A most unusual type of Dominican event took place on Friday, October 30. Simply speaking, a new chapter of the Priestly Fraternities of St. Dominic was formed. Just before the month dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary came to an end, Regina Rosarii Chapter of Joliet, IL, of the Chicago Province of St. Albert the Great, became a free-standing chapter of the province, independent of its parent chapter of St. Vincent Ferrer in River Forest, IL.

Dominican Sister Uses Faith to Help Others as COVID Contact Tracer


Sr. Ellen Coates was a public health professional prior to entering the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Today she uses those skills to spread the love and compassion of Christ as a contact tracer for the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.

Congregations find their own voices with Liturgy of the Hours revisions


In a recent Global Sisters Report article Sr. Anne Lythgoe (Peace) recognized how a customized office book could reflect one's own religious family. Dominican Praise: A Provisional Book of Prayer for Dominican Women was released in a version for Kindle in 2018. "The project to convert a printed book to an electronic edition took three years and represents the work of many Dominicans and lay partners." Lythgoe said. 

Sinsinawa Installs Memorial for Deceased Associates


2020 marks the 35th anniversary of the Dominican Associate of Sinsinawa relationship. To mark this occasion, the Congregation Leadership Council wished to provide a meaningful gift to the Associate community. Collaborating with the Relationships for Mission (RFM) Team, a suggestion surfaced that a memorial for the deceased Associates be placed in the cemetery at Sinsinawa Mound.

NYSOFA Recognizes Sister Ursula Joyce for Volunteer Contributions


Dominican Sister od Sparkill Ursula Joyce, Executive Director of Thorpe Village and Dowling Gardens senior living residences in Sparkill, NY, was among 87 volunteers recognized by the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) during the annual Older New Yorkers’ Day celebration on November 17. She was recognized for improving the quality of life within Rockland County through her involvement in the community.

Caldwell Dominicans Approve Climate and Racism Statements


At the Chapter of Life and Mission held recently by the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell, delegates affirmed by the larger congregation set direction for the next five years. The delegates also approved two statements for publication, one on the climate crisis and the other on racism. 

The Story of United States Dominicans


Recently, Preaching with Their Lives: Dominicans on Mission in the United States after 1850, the second book detailing the history of Dominicans in the United States was published. Readers of Preaching with Their Lives: Dominicans on Mission in the United States after 1850 will learn, “the little-known story of the Dominican Family―priests, sisters, brothers, contemplative nuns, and lay people―and integrates it into the history of the United States."

Sister Spotlight: Sr. Donna Maria Moses

From an early age, Dominican Sister of Mission San Jose Donna Maria Moses felt called — and she has responded with service to God, country, her community and congregation. Today she ministers as a board-certified member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and a multi-faith chaplain in the Diocese of San Jose where she coordinates spiritual services for Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital Systems.
Associate Spotlight: Deb O'Neil Lewis

Through doorways and windows, hospital chaplains tend to coronavirus patients. Dominican Associate of Grand Rapids Deb O'Neil Lewis is a chaplain at Norfolk General Hospital in Norvolk, VA. Here she talks to a patient via iPad. Social distancing has forced chaplains to counsel patients in new ways from afar.
