Dominican Sisters Conference Annual Leaders Meeting Open New Road Map to the Future

To coin a well-worn phrase, it was a Dominican Sisters Conference Elected Leaders Annual Meeting like no other. Held entirely in the virtual space, the gathering saw Sisters and guests throwing air kisses, lighting candles, dancing and praying in the electronic “cloud” of a zoom call. While over 190 attendees were far flung around the world, the conference was lively, prayerful, and, despite being conducted through computer screens, intimate.

OPSCC Justice Committee Honored

On October 13th, the Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration (OPSCC) Justice Committee was recognized at the First Friends of New Jersey & New York 2020 Beacon of Hope Awards Virtual Gala.

Lessons in Disputatio for St. Mary’s Dominican High School 8th Graders

 
In St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s eighth grade level religion classes taught by Mrs. Jill Cabes, students applied their understanding of disputatio during a week of debates on a range of topics.

S. Barbara Schwarz is Featured in "Live the Word" by Redemptorist Publications in England


In March, Amityville Dominican Sister Barbara Schwarz found herself hospitalized from Covid-19. Even today, she continues to heal from the virus' effects on her. She, therefore, finds it delightful that, although she has been busy with "the ministry of healing", the Holy Spirit has made her look very busy as of late with various projects coming to light.

General Council of Adrian Dominican Sisters Rejoices at Elevation of Archbishop Gregory 


The General Council of the Adrian Dominican Sisters released a statement in response to the October 25, 2020, appointment of Archbishop Wilton Gregory as a cardinal of the Catholic Church. 

OPUS II Announcement: Preaching with Their Lives


We are very happy to announce the release of the second iteration of the History of the Order of Preachers in the United States (OPUS) project: Preaching with Their Lives: Dominicans on Mission in the United States after 1850, on sale on November 3, 2020, from Fordham University Press.  

International Day for Eradication of Poverty

As COVID-19 has exacerbated social inequalities and economic hardships this year, the International Day for Eradication of Poverty focused on the theme “Acting Together to Achieve Social and Environmental Justice for All”. 

Sister Spotlight: Sr. Joan Agro, OP, and the Blauvelt Social Justice Committee

Since its founding, the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, NY, have followed in the footsteps of Mother Mary Ann Sammon to respond to the needs of the times. Some of the most passionate advocates in the congregation are members of the Blauvelt Social Justice Committee. Sr. Joan and other committee members have most recently paved the way in projects to get out the vote (GOTV) in November.
Associate Spotlight: Eileen Foti

Eileen Foti, an Associate of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, NY, has had to significantly shift her daily responsibilities to deal with the COVID-19 fallout. She has not been able to minister at the Motherhouse switchboard for several months. Instead, she spends this difficult time deep in prayer.

Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, author of Dead Man Walking, offers a live stream presentation on the death penalty. “ Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues” is from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. EST Tuesday, November 10, 2020.

Hope and Healing for Alzheimer's

The Rev. Dr. Jade Angelica joins Sinsinawa Mound Center via Zoom for Hope and Healing for Alzheimer’s from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. CST, Thursday, November 12. This presentation will open minds and hearts and provoke thought by challenging our cultural conditioning on a difficult topic, and offer hope and consolation to those who accompany loved ones through Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Reclaiming Indigenous Space

No matter where we are in North America, we are on land previously occupied by indigenous peoples. “ Encompassing Culture: Reclaiming Indigenous Space,” raises the visibility of Native people. It will be presented on Thursday, November 5 from 6:30-8:30pm by Dr. Patty Loew.
Retreat Helps Young Adult Women to Discern Life Path

Dubuque Area Vocation Association (DAVA) invites young adult women to an online retreat, Seeking God: A Day of Discernment for Young Adult Women, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, November 7. This retreat will offer tools for discerning your vocation to married, single or religious life. 
Hildegard of Bingen Explored in Virtual Workshop

Hildegard of Bingen, a Catholic saint and Doctor of the Church, will be the topic of discussion during St. Hildegard, the Divine Feminine, and the Greening of God from 2 to 3 p.m. CST, Saturday, November 14.
Winter Painting Class

A painting class will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, at Sinsinawa Mound. All precautionary coronavirus practices will be in place, and there is a limit of 10 people. Sarah Barnes, artist and owner of Create It Art Studio in Dubuque, IA, will guide participants in painting a skating snowperson on canvas.
Mohican storyteller Jim Bear Jacobs Virtual Interview

Join a virtual interview with Mohican storyteller Jim Bear Jacobs to learn about the connection between story and place, be challenged by Native American spirituality and learn what non-native people can do to decolonize. Story, Place, and Indigenous Spirituality, sponsored by Sinsinawa Mound Center, will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. CST Wednesday, November 11.
